The tough seven-year jail sentence handed to Yulia Tymoshenko came as a real disappointment to observers and, especially, to the West.
It is difficult to understand what the authorities have been counting for; however the reaction to the step exceeded any pessimistic forecasts. From now, even if the ruling group finds a way out and releases Yulia Tymoshenko, that will take years to make the West believe that Vitor Yanukovich is somehow different to Alexander Lukasheno or any other totalitarian governor.
